Pigmentation, Hyperpigmentation on Face, Causes and Home Remedy

Ever heard about pigmentation and hyperpigmentation? What’s the difference between them? Is pigmentation a problem? Is hyperpigmentation a problem? Are there home remedies for hyperpigmentation?

Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation are what we are going to discuss in this article. By the end of the article, you will have a good amount of knowledge regarding both of them.

What Is Pigmentation On Face Meaning?

Pigmentation on the face means the color of the face. A pigment that goes by the name melanin is responsible for giving color to your skin. Melanin is formed by special cells. Basically, pigmentation means the formation of melanin within your skin.

If the color of your skin is normal, then this means pigmentation is normal. Each person has a different level of pigmentation.

What Causes Pigmentation On Face?

The pigment melanin causes pigmentation on the face. Your skin, eye, and hair color depend upon the amount of melanin you have within your skin. Melanocytes (special skin cells) make melanin. If melanocytes make more melanin, the color of your face will become darker, which means more pigmentation.

What Is Hyperpigmentation On Face Meaning?

When your face color gets darker than usual, then this is described as hyperpigmentation. If any of your skin areas are getting darker than surrounding areas, it means you are going through hyperpigmentation.  We can say that uneven skin pigmentation is hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation happens due to the excess production of melanin by melanin-producing cells (melanocytes). Hyperpigmentation can:

  • Happen in the form of small spots
  • Cover large areas
  • Affect the whole body

What Causes Hyperpigmentation On Face?

An increased amount of melanin within your skin causes hyperpigmentation on the face or other parts of your body. Many factors are responsible for increasing the amount of melanin within your skin; consequently, causing hyperpigmentation. Let’s discuss common causes of hyperpigmentation:

  • Sun Exposure

Among all the factors that cause hyperpigmentation, sun exposure is the most common one. You may not know this but it is sunlight that triggers melanin’s production in the first place, and that is the whole reason why sun exposure is the biggest reason behind hyperpigmentation.

Melanin, being a natural sunscreen for the skin, helps in protecting your skin from dangerous UV rays. This is exactly why people suntan. However, too much sun exposure overproduces melanin, leading to hyperpigmentation.

  • Hormonal Influence

Melasma is one of the main types of hyperpigmentation, and hormonal influences are the reason behind it. Being particularly common among females, melasma occurs when progesterone and estrogen sex hormones of a female stimulate the excess production of melanin during skin exposure to the sun. Certain hormone treatments may also lead to hyperpigmentation with hyperpigmentation being a side effect of hormone treatments.

  • Aging

As you age, age spots start appearing on the skin.

  • Inflammation

Your skin becomes inflamed whenever you go through some skin injury. The inflammation triggers melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) to release a large number of pigment granules (melanosomes). Pigment granules then darken the color of the wound. This hyperpigmentation goes by the name post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Pigmentation Vs Hyperpigmentation

Some people get confused between pigmentation and hyperpigmentation. They think pigmentation and hyperpigmentation are very similar conditions when in reality, they are not.

As we explained in the earlier part of the article, pigmentation is skin color and the pigment melanin gives color to your skin.

Darkening of skin color due to various reasons describes hyperpigmentation. To put it simply, an increase in pigmentation leads to hyperpigmentation or uneven skin pigmentation.
